Title changes explained..
After some thinking I've decided to change the name of this blog from "Sustainable AgFood Reporter" to "Responsible AgFoood Reporter". The reason is down to what's perceived is excessive use of the word "sustainable". Right now I feel that the term "responsible" probably carries a bit more meaning as regards the future of natural resources on this planet. As for the removal of the word "tropical" from the sub (and its replacement by the word "modern"), I feel it is increasingly difficult to distinguish between modern tropical agriculture (increasingly efficient production of key crops eg corn or soy) and agriculture in developed countries of the Northern hemisphere. All the above can be explained: Brazilian agriculture is now as modern as US, Argentinan or Canadian agriculture and is extremely efficient. Besides Brazilian decades-long development of tropical agriculture (under the gov agency embrapa) has created new "ag frontiers" extending to the North of the country. Then the newly developed integration concept means there will be a progressive change in the face of the average fazenda and eventually, expectations of rising rural incomes and perhaps, better soil management, with less pesticides, fertilisers etc. Finally, a couple of days ago the Brazilian minister of Agriculture has indicated that Brazilian agriculture has to be the most sustainable agriculture in the world. I guess that very much ends the debate, doesn't it?
